Olympic Spirit
By Elaine Cruz

Marianne Williamson said, “Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate…but that we are powerful beyond measure.” It’s certainly not what many of us were taught as children; we’re all too familiar with the term we’re only human, which somehow carries the connotation that we are unworthy and incapable of doing anything right and therefore susceptible to the whims of a God who might—or might not—give a lowly creature riddled with all sorts of imperfections and limitations a smooth passage to paradise.
I know—a bit of an exaggeration here—but you get the point: human beings aren’t expected to be great.

Yet every four years we become fixated with the Olympics. We witness the extraordinary feats that humans beings are capable of as we watch the world’s best athletes compete against time, against each other, and most importantly, against themselves. All strive to be the best in their field. They break world records, set new ones, and ultimately remind us that part of being human is to seek greatness—to be great.
But the real beauty of the Olympics goes beyond the perfection and technicalities of the sport.

Who doesn’t shed a tear when watching a father run to his son who just snapped a muscle and fallen during a race, only to help him cross the finish line? And who isn’t moved upon hearing the personal story of an athlete who has overcome a debilitating disease, or the recent loss of a parent, and still found the fortitude to give his or her best in the competition? That’s another aspect of the Olympic spirit, and one which surpasses the race for the medal—it’s about the bond we feel with these Olympians as they go through the process of being human….and it’s because we see ourselves in them.

Deep down inside we know that we, too, have what it takes to go beyond our perceived limitations and set our own goals—even if those goals clash with what others have told us we can or can’t do. So the next time someone comes along as says, “you’re only human,” – just remember there is a part of you that isn’t human. Spirit….it’s not tangible like a medal. It’s so much more.

Elaine's Bio

Hi, I’m Elaine Alonso-Cruz and this is my Art & Culture blog. A Cuban-American, raised in Philadelphia, I enjoy just about any music (country, jazz, classical, Latin, R&B, and on…), consider myself spiritual but not religious, and although I live in Miami I prefer mountains to beaches any day. Once upon a time I wrote romance novels, the latest one being The Other Face of Love ( www.awe-struck.net/AUTHORS47/tofol.html ). While I do continue to write, I also love to read; and the genres run the gamut from literature to politics to metaphysical/new age and beyond to whatever else might spark my curiosity If I sound confused…well, I’m still just trying to sort it all out myself.

Because I believe we live in a perfectly synchronized, well-connected, cause-and-effect universe--where there is no black and white but endless shades of gray--you won’t always find clear-cut distinctions here about art and culture. What you will find often involves the blurring of the boundary lines that our mortal minds insist are there. So my Art & Culture blog is more of a blending of art-culture-politics-spirituality-psychology, and whatever else seems to somehow be part of the mix—or not. Whatever. So…whether you have a passion for all things related to art and culture, or just the curious internet surfer looking to pass the time, stop by the blog and leave your passing thoughts and comments. But I’ll warn you---I do like to press “red buttons” from time to time, all in an effort to push against my own imaginary “boundaries” as well as yours. Cheers!
